What is ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention)?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). ERP is a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) that helps individuals gradually face feared thoughts, situations, or triggers (exposure) while resisting the urge to engage in compulsive behaviours or mental rituals (response prevention).

Over time, ERP helps reduce anxiety, weaken the OCD cycle, and retrain the brain to tolerate uncertainty without relying on compulsions. This approach is considered the gold standard treatment for OCD and can also be helpful for related anxiety disorders and phobias.
